Discover The Whimsical World Of Topiary Park

Nestled in the heart of downtown Columbus, The Topiary Park is an often overlooked gem that offers a unique blend of art, history, and nature.

The park offers visitors a serene landscape where meticulously sculpted topiaries recreate a scene from a famous painting. It’s not every day you get to stroll through a living work of art, but at The Topiary Park, that’s exactly what you’ll experience.

Inspired By a Masterpiece

What sets The Topiary Park apart isn’t just its lush, perfectly manicured greenery and tranquil paths. The park is a living recreation of Georges Seurat’s famous post-impressionist painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Yes, you heard that right—a living, breathing masterpiece!

Imagine stepping into a painting where every figure and detail is crafted not from brush strokes, but from carefully sculpted topiary. It’s the only known topiary representation of a painting, making Columbus home to a truly unique cultural treasure. The park features 54 human figures, three boats, a monkey, and dogs—all shaped from yew trees. How cool is that?

From Vision to Greenery

The journey from concept to creation began when local artist James T. Mason dreamt up the idea in 1988. The garden was completed by 1992, just in time for the biggest horticultural event to ever take place in Columbus: AmeriFlora. Mason wasn’t just the brains behind the design; he was also the hands, serving as the sculptor and, for a time, the caretaker of this verdant artwork. His dedication has given Columbus something to be truly proud of.
