Columbus Libraries Help Kids Learn and Eat Well This Summer

Looking for ways to keep your kids learning, growing, and full of curiosity (and food) this summer? The Columbus Metropolitan Library has you covered with two incredible programs: the Summer Reading Challenge and Free Summer Lunches at select branches.

Here’s how your family can make the most of both:

Keep Kids Reading All Summer Long

The Summer Reading Challenge at Columbus Metropolitan Library is a fun and free program that helps kids keep learning while school is out. It’s been a favorite in the community for years, and it’s easy to see why.

Kids of all ages can join — from babies and toddlers all the way to teenagers. Even adults can take part! Everyone who signs up gets to track the time they spend reading. The more they read, the more rewards they can earn. Prizes can include things like free books, fun toys, coupons to local places, and chances to win big prizes like gift cards or tickets to events.

The best part? Kids can read whatever they like. Whether it’s picture books, graphic novels, chapter books, or even listening to audiobooks, it all counts. The goal is to build a love of reading and help kids feel proud of what they accomplish.

You can sign up online or stop by any Columbus library branch to get started. Library staff are always happy to help and can even suggest books your child might enjoy.

Reading every day, even just for 15 minutes, can make a big difference. And with the Summer Reading Challenge, your child can have fun, stay sharp, and feel good all summer long.

How It Works:

  • Sign up online or in person at any Columbus Metropolitan Library branch.
  • Track your reading minutes throughout the summer.
  • Earn prizes like books, coupons, and small toys.
  • Finish the challenge and get entered to win bigger prizes — past years have included gift cards, tech, and experiences.

Whether your child is just learning to read or flying through chapter books, the Summer Reading Challenge helps build good habits — and keeps the summer slide at bay.

Free Summer Lunches at the Library

Summer break should be a time of fun, not food insecurity. That’s why many Columbus Library branches are partnering with local organizations to offer free lunches to children ages 1–18.

No sign-up or registration is required — just stop by during meal service times.

What You Need to Know:

  • Lunches are served on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Meals are nutritious and kid-friendly.
  • Locations and serving times vary, so check the Columbus Library website or call your local branch for details.

It’s a simple way to make sure every child in our community is nourished in body and mind.

More Than Just Books

Don’t forget — the library also offers:

  • Weekly storytimes and hands-on activities
  • Teen hangouts and creative workshops
  • Take-home craft kits
  • Free Wi-Fi and computer access

And it’s all free with your library card.
