Columbus’ Favorite Talking Tree Is Back And It’s Bringing All the Holiday Feels

The holidays are in full swing, and the Columbus Metropolitan Library is here to bring some serious nostalgia to your celebrations. If you’ve ever heard an elder Millennial or Gen X-er wax poetic about Lazarus Santaland, you’re in for a treat.

Mr. Tree, the talking icon of the department store’s sixth-floor holiday wonderland, is back — in replica form — and ready to charm a whole new generation.

This revamped Mr. Tree, crafted by local special effects artist Todd Reed, now lives in the historical section of the library’s main branch at 96 S. Grant Ave.

The display is part of an effort to honor Columbus’ unique holiday traditions. Whether you grew up begging your parents to visit Santaland or you’ve never heard of it until now, it’s the perfect mix of nostalgia and holiday magic.

If you’re unfamiliar, the original Mr. Tree was a big deal back in the day.

While Santa was busy hearing kids’ wishes, Mr. Tree was cracking jokes and chatting with visitors. Some people even say it was the real star of the show, outshining St. Nick himself. And now, thanks to Reed’s artistry, the talking tree is back for you to enjoy with your kids, your friends, or honestly, just yourself (we won’t judge).

While you’re at the library, don’t miss the miniature train display. It’s an absolute marvel, with adorable figurines, a large track, impressive buildings, and even a waterfall. Between the trains and the tree, the library is serving some serious holiday vibes and keeping Columbus’ yesteryear traditions alive.
