What You Need to Know About the $10 Million Transformation of Gay Street

The Capital Line, a 2-mile urban pathway connecting some of the city’s most iconic spots, is officially in the works, and the first phase is already shaping up to be a major game-changer.

Downtown Columbus, Inc. (DCI) has partnered with design heavyweights WSP USA Inc. and MKSK to reimagine Gay Street, transforming it into a pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly corridor with serious event space vibes. Think curbless streets, shared-use paths, and space for outdoor dining — all designed to make downtown feel more connected and people-focused.

“Throughout the 2022 Downtown Strategic Plan, the community was clear: the future of Downtown Columbus must be more connected. The Capital Line is a key component of achieving that goal,” said Amy Taylor, President of Downtown Columbus, Inc.

So, what’s the plan?

The first phase of the Capital Line will stretch along Gay Street from Fourth Street to Front Street. Here’s what you can expect:

Curbless streets: Creating a seamless space that’s perfect for events and gatherings.
Dedicated paths: Cyclists and pedestrians get their own lanes, separated from traffic and sidewalk dining.
Parking and loading zones: Strategically placed to keep things practical for visitors and businesses.

This transformation will not only make Gay Street more accessible, but it will also set the tone for how the rest of the Capital Line will link up spots like the Scioto Mile, COSI, and the National Veterans Memorial & Museum.

Built on Community

The Capital Line is rooted in community feedback. Back in 2022, Columbus residents made it clear they wanted a more connected downtown, and the Capital Line is the city’s answer to that call.

“The Capital Line is more than just a transportation project – it’s a transformative vision for the future of Downtown Columbus and Gay Street. As we move forward with the design, we are focused on connecting communities, boosting local businesses, and expanding opportunities for all residents,” said Mayor Andrew J. Ginther. “The Capital Line will lay the groundwork for economic growth and inclusivity for generations to come.”

Big Names, Big Vision

This isn’t WSP and MKSK’s first rodeo. WSP has tackled major projects like Columbus’ Downtown Multimodal Study, and MKSK’s resume includes the Scioto Greenways and Dorrian Green. Together, they’re bringing decades of expertise to ensure the Capital Line is as functional as it is beautiful.

“WSP is proud to lead this team to complete Phase I on Gay Street and continue to help Columbus thrive,” said Jared Love, WSP’s Ohio Transportation Business Lead.

When Can We See It?

Updated plans will go to the City of Columbus in February 2025, with construction set to kick off late next summer. It’s a big step toward a future where downtown Columbus feels more walkable, bikeable, and connected than ever.

As Columbus City Council President Shannon G. Hardin put it, “The Capital Line is a game-changer for our city. Through partnership and collaboration, Downtown Columbus is becoming more connected, more prosperous, and more inclusive for all.”

If you’ve ever wanted to see downtown come alive in a whole new way, the Capital Line is about to deliver. Stay tuned for updates as Gay Street and beyond get the glow-up they deserve.
