The Ohio History Center museum is closed to the public through early December for building-system upgrades, the Ohio History Connection said in an announcement on its site. Every event at the museum through December is postponed. The Halloween and holiday events at Ohio Village are not affected and will still run on their scheduled dates.
The museum is normally open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The organization said the closure will keep work moving without interruption while protecting staff, visitors, volunteers and collections. ABC 6 reported that the decision followed a potential issue the organization found with the building’s fire-safety system, which was already due to be replaced.
What’s postponed
The announcement covers all events at the History Center through December, and the organization has said those programs will be rescheduled when possible. On the museum’s own calendar the affected dates now read as canceled, from a Sept. 26 workshop on preserving Ohio history through scrapbooks to a Nov. 21 talk on Ohio in the Civil War. Anyone holding a ticket, or sitting on a school-group reservation for a date between now and December, should expect to hear from the museum rather than assume a program is going ahead.
The Archives and Library, the reading room that holds the state archives and the manuscript collections, reopens by appointment only beginning Oct. 8. Appointment-only means the walk-in option is gone for now, so a research trip will need to be booked ahead of time.
What still happens at Ohio Village
Ohio Village, the historic village on the same grounds, is closed and undergoing significant infrastructure upgrades of its own. Its two seasonal events are still on, though. All Hallows’ Eve runs Oct. 17 and Oct. 24, and Holidays at Ohio Village returns Dec. 11 and Dec. 12. Both are set to proceed as scheduled.
What’s not known yet
The announcement stops at “early December” and doesn’t name a reopening date. It also doesn’t describe the building work beyond the upgrades themselves and the fire-safety system that prompted the timing. The Ohio History Connection said it plans to share another update in December, which is the next thing to watch for anyone trying to plan a winter visit.
