There’s a lot of history packed into the Buxton Inn in Granville, and after several months of renovations, the historic property is getting ready to welcome people back in.
Since April 1, work has been underway throughout the Inn, with updates to the guest rooms, courtyard, landscaping and gathering spaces, along with some much bigger projects that are a little harder to miss. The Buxton Inn will celebrate the work with a Grand Reawakening on September 23, giving guests a first look at the refreshed property.
The Inn dates back to 1812, so “renovation” is a somewhat different proposition when the building you’re working on has been around for more than two centuries. A lot of the work has focused on protecting those historic details while making the property more comfortable for people visiting today.
Outside, the property has received new lighting, landscaping, stonework and walkways. The courtyard fountains have also been repaired, including the main fountain that has been a longtime feature of the property.
One of the biggest projects has been happening above the Inn.
The Garden Room has a new handcrafted copper roof covering more than 4,000 square feet, made up of more than 130 individually fitted panels. New copper gutters and downspouts were installed as part of the work, along with additional framing and architectural details.
Inside, the guest rooms have been refreshed with new paint, wallpaper, lighting and furnishings, along with new mattresses. Several of the Inn’s familiar gathering spaces have also been updated, including reupholstered seating and custom wood tabletops.
The Tavern is getting a new entrance, updated lighting and furnishings, while the Garden Room is being refreshed inside as well. Work is still underway in the restaurant, reception areas, 1812 Lounge, Tavern and Garden Room, with more details about the restaurant expected as reopening gets closer.
The Inn will officially celebrate this next chapter on Wednesday, September 23, with its Grand Reawakening event.
The evening will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, along with live music, food, drinks and an opportunity to explore some of the newly renovated spaces throughout the property.
Registration begins at 3:30 p.m., followed by the opening reception at 4:30 p.m. Formal remarks and the ribbon-cutting will take place later in the afternoon before guests are invited into the courtyard and Main Inn.
Tickets are $200 per person, and this is a limited-capacity event, so advance purchase is required. There’s also a local-history component to the evening: 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Granville Historical Society, which works to preserve and share the community’s history.
And while the September 23 event is the big reveal, the work at the Buxton Inn isn’t quite finished yet.
The Buxton Inn Restaurant & Bar is expected to reopen in the coming months, bringing dining back to the property. Additional work will continue throughout the fall and winter as the Inn’s various spaces are completed.
