Columbus Icon Thurber House Faces An Uncertain Future

For decades, Thurber House has been a beacon of creativity in Columbus. It’s a place where imagination, humor, and the written word have found a home. But now, it’s facing significant challenges, and the organization is asking for community support to keep its doors open.

If you’ve ever strolled through Thurber House, you know it’s more than just a historic landmark. Nestled in the restored 1873 home of legendary author and humorist James Thurber, the space practically hums with the energy (or maybe that’s just the famous ghosts). It’s the kind of place where budding writers can discover their voices and where the community gathers to celebrate storytelling in all its forms.

This year marks Thurber House’s 40th anniversary—a milestone worthy of celebration.

But instead of simply looking back on decades of inspiring work, the organization is facing the difficult reality of a shaky future. Financial strain brought on by the lingering effects of the pandemic has left the organization operating with a skeleton crew. Attendance has been slow to rebound, and rising needs in the community have stretched resources thin.

Personally, I find it hard to imagine Columbus without Thurber House. It’s become an anchor for writers, readers, and dreamers, offering everything from free museum tours to creative writing programs for kids and adults. Over the years, it has welcomed everyone from nationally bestselling authors to young students penning their very first stories.

The institution has now launched its “Future 40” campaign, aiming to raise $200,000 to stabilize its finances and pave the way for another 40 years of impact. The funding would allow Thurber House to continue its vital work, including expanding teen and adult programs, hosting new events, and deepening its outreach to schools and community spaces.

This is a chance for Columbus to rally around an institution that’s been a quiet hero in the city’s creative ecosystem.

Whether it’s through a donation, attending a workshop, or renting the space for your next event, there are plenty of ways to help Thurber House regain its footing.

Without support, a vital piece of Columbus’ cultural fabric could disappear. If you believe in the power of storytelling, creativity, and community, now’s the time to lend a hand. Let’s make sure Thurber House remains a cornerstone of inspiration for generations to come.
