Metro Parks is officially opening a brand new inclusive playground, and honestly, it’s a big deal.
Not just because it’s shiny and new (though it is), but because this playground was designed specifically to welcome kids of all abilities—with thoughtful, meaningful features that make it easier for everyone to play, explore, and just be a kid.
The new playground opens at Blendon Woods Metro Park on April 10 at 10 a.m., and it’s not your average swing-and-slide setup. It’s an entire experience: ramps for mobility access, communication boards to help kiddos express themselves, musical instruments (yes, including musical steps), a cozy sensory area, and even picnic tables and shaded spaces so families can stick around longer without overheating.
And it gets better. The whole playground is fully fenced.
So if you’re a parent or caregiver of a kiddo who tends to wander, you can finally take a deep breath and just enjoy the moment. There’s even a universal changing table and hoist in the restrooms, which makes a huge difference for many caregivers.
This $1.5 million project was shaped by real families and community members who know firsthand how life-changing accessible play can be.
“Metro Parks is dedicated to providing places to play for people of all ages and abilities, and we hope this playground will be a place for growth and development, as well as tons of fun,” said Tim Moloney, Executive Director of Metro Parks. “This is a space where nature and play unite, inviting everyone to connect, explore and grow together.”
Honestly, it’s hard not to get emotional reading some of the early feedback from families who previewed the space last fall. Words like “wow,” “beautiful,” and “inclusive” were everywhere.
One parent put it perfectly: “Play doesn’t have an age limit, nor is it one size fits all. Everyone, regardless of ability, deserves the chance to play.”
Metro Parks nailed it with this one. Whether you’re swinging, drumming, zooming down the zipline, or just hanging out under the shade with your snacks, this playground invites everyone to feel included.
If you want to be part of the joy, head to Blendon Woods on April 10 at 10 a.m. for the dedication. The Inclusive Playground is in the area previously known as Hickory Grove and Blendon Woods Metro Park is located at 4265 E Dublin Granville Rd, Columbus, OH 43230.
