For most people, when you’re struggling to make ends meet buying fresh produce isn’t always a top priority.
All People’s Fresh Market wants to change that. In my neighborhood, on the south end of Columbus, 23% of individuals living here are food insecure. That means that people lack reliable access to affordable, nutritious food.
The market is hoping to bring down that number. That’s why they took an old drive-thru liquor store on Parsons Avenue and turned it into something bright, open, airy, inviting, and free.
“The idea that a drive-through liquor store can become a place of health and wholeness is a great testimony and a metaphor for how neighborhoods, through specific objectives, can flourish,” said Erin West, Healthy Eating and Living Director for All People’s Fresh Market in a statement.
The market isn’t just looking to offer people free food, although that is a big part of it. They are looking to become a force in the community that promotes education for residents about community gardening, healthy cooking, and maintaining an active lifestyle.
All People’s Fresh Market is already open but this Thursday, they’re hosting a huge event for the whole community.
At 10:30 am, the Grand Opening will kick off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event will include a smoothie bar, activities, member registration, and even a visit from Mayor Ginther. Members of the community, from all incomes, are invited to attend.
To get free food from the market, all you have to do is sign up. Income guidelines based on the household size are provided by the market. If you fall within those limits, you are eligible. Once you get a membership card, you’ll be able to come to the market as often as you like.
Although specific products are never guaranteed, you can always count on a variety of produce, and occasionally dairy, bread, and meat as well. The food at the market comes from a variety of sources, including the Mid Ohio Food Bank and local grocery stores.
All People’s Fresh Market is located at 945 Parsons Ave. The market is open Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, please click here.
