Winans Is Bringing Its Coffee (And Buckeyes) To Pickerington

The Ohio coffee and candy shop is opening a new location in Olde Pickerington Village next summer.

Pickerington is getting a new place to grab a latte, pick up a box of chocolates, or make a very strong case for bringing home a few buckeyes. Winans Coffee & Chocolate is opening a new shop at 38 N. Center St. in summer 2027, with Miles and Monica Thomas, owners of the brand’s German Village location, bringing the business to town.

Winans has been an Ohio sweet shop for more than 60 years. Brothers Max and Dick Winans opened Winans Carriage House Candies in Piqua in 1961, continuing a family confectionery tradition that started decades earlier. The business added small-batch, house-roasted coffee in the 1990s, and it’s since grown into a familiar name around the state. Today, Winans operates 20 Ohio locations, along with a production facility and a 6,000-square-foot roastery in Piqua.

Winans makes its confections using traditional methods, including cooking them in copper kettles and hand-rolling and packing them. Its buckeyes are a particular standout: creamy peanut butter centers dipped in chocolate, with a recipe the company says has been passed down through generations. They’re among my favorite buckeyes in Columbus, so I’m not exactly impartial here.

The new shop will land in Olde Pickerington Village, where downtown has been picking up some momentum.

The city has branded the area the Elevate District and is investing in its historic core, with new businesses, public improvements and community events all part of the plan. There’s already a coffee stop at Porters Coffee House and Bakery on West Church Street, plus places like Combustion Brewery, Local Cantina and Johnson’s Real Ice Cream. The downtown DORA also makes it easy to stroll between participating businesses with a drink in hand.

It’s a compact stretch with a mix of old buildings and newer additions, and the city is working to give people more reasons to spend time there. The Pickerington Farmers’ Market and seasonal events bring people downtown throughout the year, while additional restaurant and redevelopment projects are in the works.

Winans will add a little more daytime energy to that mix, with coffee, chocolate, and gifts all under one roof. And for anyone who already makes the trip to German Village for a box of buckeyes, there will soon be another option on the east side of town.

The Pickerington location is expected to open in summer 2027. For more info, head over to winanschocolate.com.
