There’s a unique house in Cincinnati that makes for a perfect day trip from Columbus.
From the outside, the house looks like any other on the street. But inside, there’s a world of wonder waiting for visitors and guests. Known as the Swing House, the three-story home is the product of artist Mark DeJong.
DeJong transformed the Swing House over three years. Originally built in the 1880s, the exterior of the home is fairly typical of Cincinnati’s residential architecture. But the inside of the Swing House is another story.
When you walk into the massive, three-story space, the first thing you notice will absolutely be the giant swing in the center of the large room. Of course, the swing is entertaining, totally worthy of a TikTok or Instagram post, and so much fun. But it’s also art.
A description of the art installation on the Swing House website reads, “Reinforced by the hourglass shape on the ceiling, the movement of the swing mimics the travel of a pendulum, again, referencing the passage of time in the revealed history expressed on the walls; the swing is not only for pleasure, but is also a vehicle for contemplation.”
From the stylish furniture to the art gallery in the basement, there’s a sense of lightness in the space. That’s intentional. The art throughout the house is meant to evoke a “release from gravity,” encouraging visitors to let go and feel the freedom of floating.
Visitors can come check out the Swing House every second Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m., for free. But if you’re interested in spending a little more individual time at the house, you can book a stay through Airbnb.
The house is intimate, perfect for a romantic getaway. Guests have access to the entire property, including both levels of the house and the front and back yards. While guests can take photos in the space during their stay for personal use or for social media, the house is not available on Airbnb for commercial shoots.
