Sheryl Crow’s music is getting a new kind of stage treatment this fall.
BalletMet, CAPA, and European producer ODD Continent are teaming up for the world premiere of Ordinary Woman, a new musical drama coming to the Davidson Theatre November 20-22. The Columbus-made production will reimagine some of Crow’s best-known songs as part of an original story about two estranged sisters.
Rather than simply putting Crow’s songs onstage as a concert, Ordinary Woman uses them to tell a story. Sisters Abilene and Rosalyn are forced back into each other’s lives amid environmental and social unrest, sending them into a reckoning with conflicting memories of their past and the fragile nature of freedom.
The story also explores the hidden toll of postpartum depression, giving the production some considerably heavier territory to work with than your average jukebox musical.
And this one is very much a collaboration between different art forms. The cast will include actors and singers alongside a BalletMet company dancer and dancers from BalletMet 2, while a live quintet performs throughout the show. Songs being reimagined include Crow favorites like “Steve McQueen” and “Strong Enough.”
“Ordinary Woman is a powerful collaboration that brings together music, drama and ballet to tell a deeply human story,” BalletMet artistic director Remi Wörtmeyer said. “We’re excited to introduce this new work to Columbus audiences and invite them to experience the timeless music of Sheryl Crow through a new lens.”
