Get ready to level up your social life! The new LevelUpLand Ohio initiative is on a mission to connect generations through the power of esports and gaming.
Launched by Levels Unlocked Enterprises Ohio in partnership with the Franklin County Board of Commissioners Office on Aging and Esports Foundry, this innovative program is set to make waves in the central Ohio community.
What’s LevelUpLand?
This groundbreaking initiative is designed for all ages, focusing on education, workforce development, and social connection through gaming. The aim? To combat the loneliness epidemic affecting many seniors by creating a vibrant community where they can engage with one another and younger generations through shared interests in esports and gaming.
Dr. Melita N. Moore, Co-Founder and CEO of Levels Unlocked Enterprises Ohio, believes in the transformative power of this program. “Research shows that connecting the elderly with their kin and each other in a virtual environment can significantly enhance their overall well-being,” she explained. By leveraging gaming as a social connector, LevelUpLand hopes to foster meaningful interactions that can lead to stronger, more vibrant communities.
Why It Matters
Studies reveal alarming statistics about the effects of social isolation on older adults, including a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 50% increased risk of developing dementia. LevelUpLand addresses these concerns by providing seniors with opportunities for meaningful connections through gaming, improving their mental and physical health while bridging the gap between generations.
Exciting Programming Ahead
The Esports Foundry’s Game Arena will be the hub for LevelUpLand’s in-person activities. Kicking things off is the Kinship Esports Program, a four-week esports league launching on September 29th in collaboration with Chess.com. This program pairs seniors with youth to form teams, battling it out for intergenerational fun. Each month, participants will learn and play a new game together, fostering teamwork and bonding.
In addition, the Senior Community Esports League will host weekly online gaming sessions, offering education on digital literacy and cybersecurity. Plus, every Tuesday is dedicated to Senior Gaming Days, featuring casual, non-competitive gaming opportunities to encourage socialization without the pressure of competition.
Justin Kogge, Owner and Co-Founder of Game Arena, is already witnessing the positive impacts of LevelUpLand. “I’m even growing closer to my own father through gaming and the Kinship Program,” he shared. “It’s a welcomed surprise to see the personal benefits of this initiative while helping the community.”
