The South End Is Getting A New Tail-Waggin’ Addition In Mutts & Co.

Mutts & Co., a popular local pet supply store, is bringing its ninth location to 364 E. Whittier Street, nestled along the borders of three South End neighborhoods: German Village, Merion Village, and Schumacher Place.

The exact opening date is still being finalized, but the excitement is already brewing, thanks to a post shared to the company’s Facebook page.

This new store promises to be a go-to destination for pet parents across the area. It will feature a range of natural pet foods and supplies, as well as a self-service dog wash.

This means you can give your pooch a top-notch clean-up without the hassle of doing it at home. Plus, Mutts & Co. is extending its free, same-day delivery service to several downtown neighborhoods, including Merion Village, Short North, Arena District, Olde Towne East, Franklinton, and Bexley.

For those curious about the building’s history, it has quite a past.

Built in 1891, the space is no stranger to animals and animal lovers. Although it’s had many identities over the years, it’s most whimsical is probably the Yorkshire Pet Mercantile & James Herriot Memorial Veterinary Hospital. This unique vet office, founded by Ken Nekic, was a tribute to the famous British vet James Herriot and blended a cozy, old-world charm with modern veterinary care.

Nekic’s Yorkshire Pet Mercantile featured everything from a cat adoption center to a memorial space dedicated to Herriot, complete with animal-themed artwork and a vintage-style vet office. He even removed layers of modern construction to reveal the building’s historic brick walls and wooden floors, giving the space a charming, retro feel.

In recent years, there were ambitious plans to transform the space into a restaurant with a rooftop bar, but those proposals were shelved. Instead, the building’s historical charm will now welcome pet enthusiasts to Mutts & Co.’s new location.
