In December, we asked our readers to help us support the Mid-Ohio Food Collective, and you answered in a big way. Together, you helped raise $1,498.55, enough to provide up to 3,746 meals for neighbors across central and eastern Ohio who are facing hunger. That kind of generosity matters, and we want to take a moment to say thank you.
Hunger is not an abstract issue. It affects real people in our communities, often during moments when support systems fail or suddenly disappear. Late last fall, families across Ohio were hit hard when SNAP benefits were disrupted during the federal government shutdown. For many households, those benefits are what make groceries possible from one week to the next. When they were paused, thousands of families were left scrambling.
That’s when the Mid-Ohio Food Collective and its network of pantry partners stepped in, and so did this community.
Emergency food orders were placed almost immediately. Fresh produce, milk, eggs, meat, and shelf-stable foods began moving through MOFC’s warehouses and out to pantries across 20 counties. In just weeks, more than 3.4 million pounds of food were distributed to help families get through the crisis.
Your donations were part of that response. They helped put food on tables, eased stress for families doing everything they could to get by, and reminded people that they are not alone. As one SNAP recipient shared, losing access to benefits can feel hopeless, even when you’re doing everything right. Community support can be the difference between fear and relief.
What makes this especially meaningful is that your generosity was part of a much larger wave of care.
During the shutdown, more than 4,400 new donors gave to MOFC, hundreds became monthly sustainers, and local leaders, businesses, and everyday residents all stepped up. It was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when people look out for one another.
The government shutdown has ended, and SNAP benefits have been restored, but the need hasn’t disappeared. Food insecurity remains near record highs, and organizations like the Mid-Ohio Food Collective continue to rely on community support to meet that need.
If you donated, shared the fundraiser, or simply took a moment to care, thank you. You showed up for your neighbors in a real and tangible way, and that’s something to be proud of.
