These Gravity-Defying Sculptures Have Totally Transformed Schiller Park

Floating above Schiller Park, visitors will now find an incredible art installation.

Three dozen suspension sculptures by Polish artist Jerzy Jotka Kedziora will be on display this winter at three Columbus parks and at the Main Library. The sculptures, which are seriously mesmerizing, explore the concept of balance. They way they are suspended allows the sculptures to interact with the environment in a way that shows off movement.

The pieces are part of an exhibition by Jerzy Jotka Kedziora called “Suspension: Balancing Art, Nature, and Culture.” They will be on display at Schiller, Livingston, and Thurber parks as well as the Main Library until March 1. The exhibit is presented by Friends of Schiller Park in association with the Art & Balance Foundation of Poland.

Organized by Katharine Moore, president of the Friends of Schiller Park, the display is breathing new energy into the parks.

“They are just so spectacular,” said Moore. “Having something just up in the air like that — it’s a kind of kinetic experience.”

The transport and installation of the sculptures cost Friends of Schiller Park $10,000 and a crew installed the art late last week.

Walking through Schiller Park, I can honestly say that I was so moved by the sculptures. The way they sway in the breeze and seem to float above the paths is nothing short of magical. I especially loved the rowing sculpture over the pond. It was so strong and delicate at the same time, adding a whimsical, artistic element to an already wonderful park.

I highly recommend that you make time to head to the parks and check the sculptures out in person. I can’t wait to see how they change with the seasons. I can see the snowy Instagram opportunities already.
