Welcome To Columbus Navigator

In my formative years, the internet wasn’t ubiquitous yet. It wasn’t yet possible to spend hours upon hours online, so as an information obsessed kid I had to find other avenues.

I read anything and everything in those days, but I was always newspaper crazy. The local paper (thin and only published Tuesdays and Thursdays – I lived in a small town), the Cincinnati Enquirer, USA Today, Baseball Weekly (underrated), and the more exotic rarely seen papers – the Columbus Dispatch, the New York Times, and the papers seen on out of town trips.

When I was a little older I even had a brief obsession with the Daily Racing Form, a true American institution. RIP Beulah Park.

This all made me a bit of an oddball. Not many kids in Hillsboro, Ohio had their noses stuck in a newspaper … ever really, let alone daily. But I loved newspapers and I loved the news.

Since the 2016 election there’s been a lot of chatter about the importance of quality news. That importance is something I have always deeply felt, and so it feels like a good time to throw my hat into the ring.

Columbus has entered an interesting time when it comes to local media. The local newspaper is no longer locally owned, having been bought out by a mega conglomerate that now owns virtually everything locally printed. The Dispatch (and Columbus Monthly and This Week News and … you get the idea) do great, admirable work, but they’ve been made to do more with less. Your local paper is now literally designed and assembled in Austin, Texas and it’s tough to see things reversing course and getting more local in the future.

All this to say, I believe there’s ample room for more local media voices in the Columbus landscape.
