The Pit BBQ On Parsons Ave. Is Fantastic And You Should Definitely Get The Pit Bowl

As a lover of barbecue living in the South End of Columbus, I’ve been spoiled the past few years.

We’ve had some great places open up serving up all manner of delicious smoked meats, creamy mac & cheese, and fluffy cornbread. But I may have just found my new favorite place.

The Pit BBQ is located at 1542 Parsons Ave. in Vassor Village, and it’s the second location for the expanding barbecue empire. Their first location opened on Cleveland Ave. in 2016, followed by a food truck in 2017. Now that this second location has launched, co-owner D’Andre Martin says that their third spot, located at 4219 N. High St. in Clintonville will open this summer.

Being a part of the neighborhood is something that’s important to everyone at The Pit BBQ. That’s why they chose Parsons Ave. for their second location.

“We just wanted to be able to grow with the community, give back to the community, and give jobs to people in the community,” said Martin. “90% of our employees here are from this community.”

The interior of the restaurant is only about 900 square feet. They can seat around 25 guests, but that number will double once the weather’s nice and the patio seating becomes available. Outside, the smoker is the centerpiece of the space, but there’s plenty of room for activities like live music and games. Cornhole was mentioned and I will definitely be there embarrassing myself with my horrific aim.

The menu at the Parsons location has all of the old favorites of the Cleveland Ave. spot, with some very welcome additions. The Pit Bowl is an absolute must if you’re stopping by. It’s made up of a toasted brioche bun, topped with your choice of meat, mac & cheese, pit slaw, and barbecue sauce.

The pit slaw is so delicious. It’s made with kale instead of traditional cabbage and it adds a nice crunch to the Pit Bowl. We probably remarked on how good the slaw nearly every time we took a bite, and we meant it.

If you’re looking to skip the kale, you can’t go wrong with one of their sandwich combos. I chose the pulled pork sandwich with a side of fries, and even though I couldn’t finish it all, I enjoyed every bite.

Currently, The Pit on Parsons is only open Thursday-Sunday, but those hours will expand later in the spring. To stay up to date on all the happenings of The Pit, you can check out their website here.
