Tuesday morning’s storms brought some seriously nasty weather to Columbus, including winds strong enough to flip a car traveling along I-71.
Video from the Ohio Department of Transportation shows the moment a vehicle was flipped by the storm around 10:08 a.m. near Weber Road.
The storm was part of a larger system that moved through Central Ohio Tuesday morning after another round of storms overnight Monday. The storms brought heavy rain, strong winds, thunder and lightning, along with additional flooding in parts of the area.
Traffic can be seen slowing down as the storm moves through the area, with visibility dropping and wind picking up. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the car traveling in the right lane is lifted and flipped over onto the highway.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
The National Weather Service reported a wind gust of 82 mph at John Glenn International Airport as the storms moved through.
The weather was severe enough that the NWS issued a rare destructive thunderstorm warning for counties east of Columbus shortly before 11 a.m. The NWS uses the destructive designation for storms producing winds of at least 80 mph and/or baseball-sized hail.
And unfortunately, the weather isn’t necessarily done with us yet.
Additional rounds of thunderstorms are possible throughout Tuesday, with heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding remaining the primary concerns. Parts of Central Ohio, including Columbus, are under a Level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather today.
