Ohio is full of some truly spectacular natural wonders.
I know, I know, we’ve got quite a reputation for cornfields. But this state is so much more. Throughout the rolling hills and rocky canyons, there are beautiful spots just waiting to be discovered by adventurers.
Dundee Falls is exactly that kind of place. The fifteen-foot waterfall sits inside the Beach City Wildlife Area, and it keeps flowing when plenty of other Ohio falls have dried up. Catch it after a good rain for the full show, or in deep winter, when it freezes into a wall of ice. Hidden off a primitive trail, the short path passes by sandstone bluffs and hemlock trees on the way to an impressive waterfall.

In 2025, the USA TODAY Network named Dundee Falls one of America’s Most Treasured Views, which is a lot of attention for a waterfall most Ohioans have never heard of. It still doesn’t get anywhere near the foot traffic of more popular hiking destinations around the state, so if a quiet walk in the woods is your cup of tea, you should make time to visit.
The main falls sit just a short walk from the parking lot, about a third of a mile there and back. Hikers who want a longer outing can follow the trail system deeper into the wildlife area for a roughly 2-mile trek with a bit of climbing. The path isn’t paved, so muddy boots may be a problem.
The main waterfall isn’t very far along the trail at all, so if you’ve only got time for a quick visit, you can easily check out this beauty. The trail is open year-round and the area is always beautiful, no matter when you choose to visit.
There Are Actually Two Waterfalls Here
Most visitors only ever see the main falls, but Beach City Wildlife Area hides a second, bigger cascade a short drive away. From the main lot, head north two-tenths of a mile, turn onto Camp Road, and watch for another unmarked gravel pull-off on the right after about half a mile. The falls sit only about a hundred feet down the path. Like its neighbor, it’s best right after a good rain.
Beach City Wildlife Area sits in Ohio’s Amish Country, which is an area of the state that should certainly make your list of places to check out. Located in northeastern Ohio, the region has plenty for visitors, from wineries and restaurants to some truly unique lodging.
One thing to know before you go: Beach City is a public hunting area, and deer seasons run from late September into early February. The trail stays open to hikers all year, but wear blaze orange in the fall and consider saving your visit for another weekend during the December gun season.
You can find the trailhead parking lot at 8525 Dundee Wilmot Rd NW in Dundee (directions). It’s a gravel lot with no sign, and parking is free. Now get out there and start exploring, friends!
