A $35 Million Transformation Is Coming To The Columbus Zoo

Big changes are underway at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. If you’ve been to the zoo before, you probably know the North America region as a place where you can catch glimpses of some of the continent’s most iconic wildlife.

But starting this summer, it’s getting a major glow-up. Say hello to North America Trek, a totally reimagined experience that will bring you even closer to the incredible animals that call this part of the world home.

North America Trek is a $35 million transformation designed to create a more immersive and engaging experience for both guests and the animals.

You’ll see river otters dart through crystal-clear waters, black bears exploring a habitat built just for them, and spotting bald eagles soaring overhead. You’ll even get to observe Mexican wolves in a brand-new space that mirrors their natural environment.

The goal? To inspire curiosity and connection. The thoughtfully designed pathways and updated signage will help visitors learn about these incredible creatures while feeling like they’ve stepped into the heart of North America’s wilderness.

One of the most exciting aspects of North America Trek is the way it prioritizes both the animals and the environment. The Columbus Zoo has worked hard to create modern, enriching spaces that reflect natural landscapes.

Native plants will be incorporated throughout the area, not only making the space look beautiful but also benefiting the animals who live there.

And let’s talk about the Ohio Center for Wildlife Conservation—a brand-new addition that will highlight local conservation efforts. This is where visitors can learn about ways to protect Ohio’s wildlife and get inspired to take action. So when you visit, you’re not just having a great time. You’re also supporting important conservation work.

If you’ve been following along since construction kicked off in October 2023, you know this transformation has been a long time coming.

With habitats for Mexican wolves, bald eagles, black bears, river otters, songbirds, and trumpeter swans all in the works, the wait will be well worth it.

To make it all happen, the zoo is making some temporary changes. The main public pathway through the North America region will be closed while construction is underway, but don’t worry—there’s an alternate route.

Guests will start their journey next to Village Coffee in Entry Village, then take a scenic stroll along the shuttle pathway to reach the North America, Polar Frontier, and Heart of Africa regions.

Benches will be available along the way if you need a break, and updated maps and signage will help keep you on track.

Summer might feel like it’s a ways off, but trust us—it’ll be here before you know it. And when it arrives, North America Trek will be ready to take you on an unforgettable journey through the landscapes and wildlife of our own backyard.
