When Central Ohio Schools Start: The First Day Of School For 21 Districts

The first day of school lands on a different date in almost every district around Columbus. This guide tracks the published start dates for 21 central Ohio school districts, with every date pulled from that district’s own 2026-27 calendar and linked in the table so families can check the source directly.

One date on this list changed after the Aug. 11 derecho. Upper Arlington pushed its first day back because of storm damage, and the details are covered below the table. Every other district’s own website showed no storm-related schedule change as of Aug. 13.

Most districts also stagger their openings, so the “first day” often applies to certain grade levels or last names before everyone is in the building. The third column spells out how each district handles it.

Upper Arlington’s Storm Delay

The derecho that tore through central Ohio on Aug. 11 knocked out power and dropped trees across Upper Arlington the day before classes were set to begin. The district called off its planned Aug. 12 start and moved the first day to Monday, Aug. 17, when grades 1-6 and 9 report alongside kindergarten orientation. Grades 1-12 attend Aug. 18, and all students are in session Aug. 19.

How Staggered Starts Work

Districts stagger for a practical reason. A building full of students who all need lockers, bus routes and schedules sorted on the same morning is chaos, so many districts bring in transition grades first. The pattern usually puts 1st graders, 6th graders and 9th graders in the building a day early, since those students are new to their schools. Kindergarten almost always starts later than everyone else, sometimes a full week later. Several districts also split kindergartners alphabetically by last name.
