Nobody wants to spend their afternoon comparing hospitals. But when life throws you a curveball, having a little extra information can make a stressful decision a bit easier.
The latest U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings are out, and several Columbus-area hospitals earned high marks for everything from cancer care to orthopedic surgery. This year’s rankings also introduced new regional specialty rankings, making it easier to compare hospitals close to home instead of only looking at nationally known medical centers.

Ohio State earns national recognition
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center once again landed among the nation’s best hospitals, tying for No. 46 in the country. The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute also received a national ranking, reinforcing what many Central Ohio residents already know: Columbus has become a destination for specialized medical care.
Ohio State also picked up several “High Performing” ratings for procedures and conditions, along with recognition in multiple specialty areas.
Several other Columbus hospitals also stood out
The rankings weren’t just good news for Ohio State.
OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital led the way locally with 16 High Performing ratings across procedures and conditions. OhioHealth Grant Medical Center followed with 12 High Performing ratings, while Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital earned six and Mount Carmel East Hospital received five. OhioHealth Doctors Hospital and Dublin Methodist Hospital also earned recognition in multiple categories.
What’s new this year?
One of the biggest updates to the rankings is a stronger focus on local care.
Instead of only highlighting nationally ranked hospitals, U.S. News now includes regional specialty rankings in four areas:
- Cancer
- Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery
- Orthopedics
- Rehabilitation
Most people aren’t hopping on a plane for medical care. They’re looking for the best hospital within driving distance. These new rankings are designed to make those comparisons easier, while placing even more emphasis on patient outcomes like survival rates and complications after treatment.
Of course, no ranking can tell you which hospital is right for your specific situation. Your doctor, insurance, and individual medical needs all matter. Still, it’s encouraging to see multiple Columbus hospitals recognized for providing high-quality care across a wide range of specialties.
