Last Call: An Iconic Campus Dive Bar Is Closing In September

It’s the end of an era for a beloved Columbus dive bar.

Bier Stube, a staple in the campus area for decades, is set to close its doors for good by the end of September. Craig Kempton, the bar’s owner, announced the sad news on social media, expressing his regret that he couldn’t save the Stube. The bar’s final weekend of operations will be September 21st, with the building needing to be vacated by October 1st.

Bier Stube, located at 1497 N. High St., has been a go-to spot for students and locals alike, known for its unpretentious vibe and affordable drinks. However, the bar and several other buildings in the area are slated for demolition to make way for a new 13-story student apartment tower. The project, developed by Chicago-based Harbor Bay Ventures, is part of a larger redevelopment plan for the 9th and High Street block.

The new tower is expected to be a striking addition to the campus area, featuring a dark-colored design made from mass timber, a sustainable and modern building material. Despite the excitement around the new development, the closure of Bier Stube marks a bittersweet moment for the Columbus community.

As the Stube prepares to close, Kempton has promised to share more details in the coming days. For now, patrons have a few weeks to raise a glass and say goodbye to a place that has been more than just a bar—it’s been a home away from home for many.
