Witches Are Swapping Broomsticks for Paddle Boards This Weekend

If you see a coven of witches flying down the Scioto River this weekend, don’t be alarmed—your eyes aren’t deceiving you. The witches are back for a ghoulishly good time.

On Saturday, October 19th, witches and warlocks alike will gather for the 6th Annual Witch/Warlock Paddle, one of the most unique and spooky events to hit Columbus this October.

Dressed in their best magical costumes, these adventurous stand-up paddleboarders will be taking over the Scioto River to celebrate the spooky season in style. Whether you’re a seasoned paddleboarder or just a Halloween enthusiast, this event promises to be a frightfully fun experience for everyone involved.

The event will kick off at 10 a.m. from Bicentennial Park, where participants will launch their paddle boards and head out on the water, creating a bewitching scene right in the heart of downtown. The backdrop of Columbus’ skyline will make for some seriously Instagram-worthy moments, so be sure to have your cameras ready.

If you’re feeling inspired to grab your broomstick—or in this case, your paddleboard—and join in on the fun, there are a few important things you’ll need to know before hitting the water.

First, all participants are required to bring their own paddle boards, so if you don’t have one, now’s the time to borrow or rent! It’s also crucial that everyone wears a personal flotation device (PFD) for safety. Some participants prefer to add a little flair by decorating their PFDs to match their costumes, which only adds to the festive spirit.

This is a paddle-at-your-own-risk event, meaning participants are responsible for their safety on the water. It’s also a great opportunity to gather your friends, whether they join you on their boards or come down to watch from the riverbank. Spectators can enjoy the sight of witches gliding down the river, bringing a touch of Halloween magic to the Scioto Mile.

And if you’re worried about the weather, fear not.

If rain decides to crash the party, the event will be postponed until Sunday, October 20th, at 12 p.m. So, even if the forecast isn’t in your favor, you’ll still have a chance to join the fun.
