Hear Van Gogh Come To Life Through Music At Capital University

Columbus audiences have a chance to experience Van Gogh in a completely new way on Sunday, October 26. Capital University will host the world premiere of “Vincent’s Sky,” a new work by internationally acclaimed composer Jake Runestad. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on the Haueisen Stage at Mees Hall and is free to the public.

The piece combines music inspired by Walt Whitman’s writings with projections of Van Gogh’s paintings, exploring the emotional depth and beauty of the artist’s life. Runestad emphasizes that the work is about more than Van Gogh’s struggles. It highlights his generosity, his capacity for love, and the way he found wonder in the world around him.

This premiere continues a long partnership between Runestad and Capital University.

The Chapel Choir has performed several of his works over the years, including “Please Stay,” which has become a widely shared anthem of hope for those struggling with mental health challenges. Past collaborations have earned awards, international tours, and performances at national conferences.

“Some of the most meaningful moments in Chapel Choir history have been written with Jake Runestad,” said Dr. Lynda Hasseler, director of choral activities. “With ‘Vincent’s Sky,’ we are presenting a piece that reaches beyond music into the heart of the audience.”
