The Short North will be packed with new exhibitions, live music, local artists and creative pop-ups during September’s Gallery Hop.
Labor Day weekend is already a pretty solid excuse to spend some time wandering around Columbus, and the Short North is giving you another reason to make the trip.
September’s Gallery Hop returns Saturday, September 5 from 4–8 p.m., with galleries opening new exhibitions, artists creating work live throughout the neighborhood, and plenty of music and other creative happenings along High Street. The event also lines up with the nearby Greek Festival, making it easy to turn Gallery Hop into part of a full weekend downtown.
There’s a little bit of everything happening at the galleries this month, from longtime Columbus artists to brand-new exhibitions.
At Sharon Weiss Gallery, the September Salon Show will feature original artwork in a variety of styles and mediums. Sean Christopher Gallery is bringing back its 9th Annual Old School Invitational, highlighting Columbus College of Art and Design alumni from the 1970s and ’80s.
Over at 24 Lincoln St. Gallery, resident artist Moon Evans will showcase dreamlike oil paintings inspired by solitude, nature and memory. Marcia Evans Gallery will continue its exhibition of abstract painters Richard Ferguson and JT Thompson.
Studios on High Gallery will debut Ruby, an exhibition of mixed-media work by Tracy Greenwalt that turns collected paper materials into imagined landscapes.
There will also be a one-day-only pottery pop-up at Adamah Ceramics, featuring five local ceramicists: Anatomy of a Form Ceramics, Aurelene Rituals, Sky and Earth Studio, Bakker Pottery and Tal’s Pottery Place.
And at CMA at The Pizzuti, visitors can continue exploring Tavares Strachan: The Day Tomorrow Began, the first U.S. museum survey of the internationally recognized conceptual artist.
Gallery Hop extends beyond the usual gallery walls, too.
GALLERIE will host an evening focused on fashion, art and culture, with emerging local and regional brands, one-of-a-kind upcycled pieces, a live DJ, a bar activation and complimentary hot dogs.
The Hilton Columbus Downtown will also host its monthly Local Art & Culinary Tour from 4–6 p.m. The tour gives guests a look at the hotel’s 450-piece original art collection, along with wine pairings and chef-created bites.
Live music will pop up around the neighborhood throughout the evening, including performances from All Those Who Wander, Brisa Bonita, Ben Bachert, Emaline and Taylor Davis. Visual artists Chalk Goblin, Averie Setser and maddivillee will also create original works live during the event.
And because Gallery Hop can involve a fair amount of wandering, Short North Ambassadors will be stationed throughout the neighborhood to help with wayfinding, non-emergency assistance and walking safety escorts. September Gallery Hop takes place Saturday, September 5 from 4–8 p.m. in the Short North Arts District. Admission to Gallery Hop itself is free, though some individual events may have their own costs.
