These Upcoming Parks Will Change the Way You Explore Columbus

As a kid, I spent a ton of time outside, specifically at City and Metro Parks. But I don’t think I really appreciated just how much this city offered in terms of green spaces until I was an adult. Now, I’m forever grateful that I was able to explore and take refuge in the great outdoors. And that gratitude keeps coming because Columbus continues to create beautiful outdoor spaces to check out.

From city-led projects to Metro Parks expansions and private developments, new parks and green spaces are sprouting up all over town. Here’s a look at some of the most exciting additions in the works.

The Linden Green Line

A Columbus Recreation and Parks project, the Linden Green Line is set to transform a 7-mile stretch of abandoned railway into a 58-acre linear park and trail. This innovative park will connect South Linden, North Linden, and Northland communities, linking 3,000 businesses, 19 schools, 4 community centers, and 10 parks. With more than 131,000 residents living within walking or cycling distance, this is a game-changer for connectivity and revitalization.

Unlike the Linden Green Line, ParkWalk is a private development spearheaded by the Edwards Companies as part of the Preston Centre revitalization. Inspired by New York’s High Line, this landscaped plaza will feature a sunken garden, waterfall, and pond. Elevated above East Capital Street, the space will serve as an urban oasis with seating, performance areas, and even food carts.

Bank Run Metro Park

Metro Parks is getting in on the action, too! Bank Run Metro Park, located on former YMCA property along Big Walnut Creek, is shaping up to be a hub for outdoor events and recreation. Unlike typical Metro Parks, this one is being designed with large-scale events like 5K runs in mind. The park’s name pays homage to the type of rock found in the area, commonly used as a foundation material in construction. This park is particularly exciting to me, as I spent a ton of time at Hoover Y Park as a kid. It’s a beautiful area and I can’t wait to see what Metro Parks does with the space.

Another project from Columbus Recreation and Parks, Gender Road Park is currently in the master planning phase. This 32-acre park will complement the nearby Pickerington Ponds Metro Park and is set to become a regional destination in Southeast Columbus. Among its planned features? Pickleball courts, because Columbus can’t get enough of them! The park is expected to open in spring 2025.
