The dream of connecting Columbus to Chicago and Pittsburgh by passenger rail is one step closer to becoming a reality.
A collaborative effort between the City of Fort Wayne, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) has taken a significant leap forward with the engagement of HNTB Corporation. This experienced transportation planning and design consultant has been brought on board to help implement the Midwest Connect Corridor Identification and Development (CID) grant.
Back in December 2023, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) awarded Fort Wayne a $500,000 grant for the Midwest Connect Corridor project. This federal grant aims to develop a comprehensive scope, schedule, and budget for corridor planning and preparing a Service Development Plan that will ultimately connect Pittsburgh to Chicago, with key stops in Fort Wayne and Columbus. HNTB Corporation will receive up to $450,000 to conduct this initial work, which includes reviewing past studies, identifying remaining gaps, and laying the groundwork for the planning phase of the project. The contract for these tasks runs through June 2025.
HNTB’s extensive experience with passenger rail corridors nationwide makes them a perfect fit for this project. The firm has already played a crucial role in securing the CID grant and offers a wide range of services, including feasibility studies, planning, environmental review, conceptual design, final design, and construction management. Their involvement is seen as a significant boost to the project’s prospects.
“This is a major step forward in the public-private effort to reconnect Central Ohio to the nation’s passenger rail network,” said William Murdock, Executive Director of MORPC. “This partnership across several states helps to advance the required work to qualify for federal funds for implementation. It builds on years of work showing passenger rail is a critical investment for prosperity and attracting talent.”
Passenger rail service has long been a topic of interest and advocacy in Columbus. The city, which lacks a robust passenger rail system, stands to benefit significantly from such a project. Enhanced rail connectivity could spur economic growth, reduce traffic congestion, and offer a more sustainable travel option for residents and visitors alike.
Currently, Columbus is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. without passenger rail service. The introduction of a rail link to major cities like Chicago and Pittsburgh could change that, making Columbus an even more attractive place for businesses and individuals.
“This project represents a transformative opportunity for our region,” said Parag Agrawal, Chief Mobility & Infrastructure Officer & Senior Director of Programming at MORPC. “By enhancing connectivity and accessibility, we are not only fostering economic development but also promoting sustainable and efficient transportation solutions for the future.”
As the project progresses, residents and stakeholders alike will be keeping a close eye on developments. With the expertise of HNTB Corporation and the collaborative effort of multiple regional organizations, the vision of connecting Columbus to the broader national rail network is on track to becoming a reality.
