Remember Sugar? The old Park Street nightlife spot is coming back, although the Sugar opening on August 27 is going to look pretty different from the one you might remember.
One Hospitality is bringing the name back to 504 Park St. with a new Latin and Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and bar, complete with an agave-focused cocktail program, all-day dining, weekend brunch, and a pretty massive patio.
The idea is for Sugar to be the kind of place you can drop into without having to make a whole production out of it. Lunch with a friend, happy hour after work, dinner, brunch on the weekend, or drinks that start as “just one” and somehow turn into the rest of your evening are all fair game.
“With Sugar, we wanted to create the kind of place that fits into people’s everyday lives. Somewhere you can stop in for lunch, meet friends for happy hour, celebrate over dinner, or end the night with a great cocktail,” said Justin Kintz, President of One Hospitality.
There Will Be A Lot Of Margaritas
The food menu is being developed by Javier Canales, Christian Jones, and Executive Chef Chad DeVault, who are pulling from Latin American, Spanish, and Mediterranean cuisines.
Expect housemade dips and shareable starters, tacos, fresh seafood, and larger entrées, along with a weekend brunch menu. The whole thing is supposed to feel approachable, with enough variety that you could come in for something casual or actually sit down for a full dinner.
The bar, meanwhile, is going pretty hard on agave.
Beverage Director Hans Maggard, whose cocktail programs include Astra Rooftop, is putting together a margarita-forward menu alongside Spanish-inspired spritzes and highballs, seasonal cocktails, Latin American wines, and plenty of tequila and mezcal.
There will also be tasting flights for people who want to try their way through the agave selection rather than committing to one bottle or pour.
The Space Is Going To Be Pretty Hard To Miss
Sugar will take up two floors, with custom hand-drawn wallpaper, lots of greenery, rich textures, a custom staircase between the levels, and photo booths tucked into the space.
Outside is where things get particularly interesting. The patio will have cabanas, fire pits, and lounge seating, so there’s plenty of room for the sort of warm-weather happy hour that accidentally becomes dinner.
Sugar will also have weekday happy hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with half-off cocktails, draft beer, wine by the glass, starters, and tacos.
The restaurant’s regular hours will be 4 p.m. to midnight on Mondays, 11 a.m. to midnight Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to midnight on Sundays.
One Hospitality Has Big Plans For Park Street
Sugar is part of a much larger push from One Hospitality to turn Park Street into a neighborhood where you can pretty much spend the entire day eating and drinking without going very far.
The company is also behind Astra Rooftop and Spruce St. Sporting, and has several more concepts in the works, including Sorella, The Parlor, Park Street Patio, and Sugar and Spice.
“We’ve always believed Park Street has the potential to become one of the most exciting hospitality districts in Columbus, and Sugar is another step toward building a neighborhood where there’s truly something for everyone,” Kintz said.
That seems to be the general idea: give people enough options that they can start their day with coffee or lunch, stick around for happy hour, grab dinner, head to a rooftop, catch a game, or keep the night going without having to leave the neighborhood.
Sugar will officially open on Thursday, August 27, and One Hospitality is planning a ticketed grand opening party from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. that night. For more info, head over to sugarcolumbus.com.
