CAPA Receives Major Grant For Historic Downtown Music Hall Renovation

CAPA’s plan to transform a historic downtown church into a new music hall just received a major financial boost.

This week, CAPA announced that it has received a $500,000 grant from Bank of America to support the ongoing renovation of the former Central Presbyterian Church at Third and Chapel streets.

According to CAPA, the gift represents the largest Bank of America investment of its kind in central Ohio.

The funding will help convert the historic church into a flexible performance and event venue designed to meet Columbus’ growing demand for mid-sized music and arts spaces. When complete, the venue is expected to host everything from concerts and performances to community events and private gatherings.

The building itself dates back to 1859, making it one of the oldest structures still standing downtown.

CAPA’s renovation plans aim to preserve many of the church’s historic architectural details while adapting the space into a modern venue.

Last year, the Downtown Commission approved CAPA’s $14 million proposal for the project, officially moving plans forward after years of discussion and planning. The venue is expected to accommodate roughly 600 guests for standing events and about 300 for seated performances.

One of the most notable features of the renovation is the preservation of the church’s stained glass, including a western wall installation attributed to Ludwig Von Gerichten. CAPA has previously said the goal is to maintain the building’s historic character while creating a welcoming gathering place for modern audiences.

In addition to the performance hall itself, the project also includes a two-story support building with dressing rooms, restrooms, bar space, and a rooftop gathering area.

Bank of America noted that it has provided $5.7 million in grants locally since 2020 to support nonprofits and community initiatives across Columbus. CAPA said this latest investment will help move the music hall project closer to reality.

The anticipated opening date for the venue is now set for fall 2027.
