Columbus Zoo Evacuated Twice In One Week As Investigation Continues

It happened again. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium was evacuated Tuesday after receiving another safety threat, just days after a similar incident over the weekend.

According to a joint update from Zoo officials and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, the threat on May 5 prompted a full evacuation out of an abundance of caution. The Zoo closed for the remainder of the day while authorities conducted a thorough sweep of the property.

Officials say both incidents have now been cleared, and everyone is safe.

That includes guests, staff, and animals. Just like Saturday’s evacuation, no credible threat was ultimately found.

The Zoo confirmed it will reopen Wednesday, May 6 at 9 a.m., but visitors can expect to see a more noticeable law enforcement presence at the entrance moving forward.

Law enforcement is now investigating both incidents together.

The Sheriff’s Office is working alongside federal partners to determine who is behind the threats and whether they’re connected to the wave of similar calls reported at zoos across the country over the weekend.

“The Columbus Zoo is important to our community and, as always, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office will work alongside them to provide for a safe experience,” said Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer in a statement.

The Zoo says safety remains the top priority.

In addition to reviewing protocols following the back-to-back evacuations, officials emphasized that existing security measures, including screening and monitoring systems, are already in place.

“The safety of our guests, staff, and animals guides every decision we make,” said Zoo President and CEO Tom Schmid. “We will continue moving forward with a strong focus on safety while providing a positive and welcoming experience for our community.”

For now, operations are expected to return to normal Wednesday, though the investigation into both threats is ongoing.
