Westcott House
About: Completed in 1908, the Westcott House is Wright’s only Prairie Style home in Ohio. The long horizontal lines and open floor plan are all there, and the art glass windows throw light around the rooms in a way photos don’t capture. The house spent decades chopped into apartments before a top-to-bottom restoration brought Wright’s design back. Don’t skip the garden or the pavilion; they’re essential chapters of the Westcott story.

Louis Penfield House & RiverRock
About: Wright designed this one in the 1950s for Louis Penfield, a painter who stood 6 feet 8 inches, so the ceilings and doorways run noticeably taller than a standard Usonian. Cantilevered roofs and walls of glass blur the line between indoors and out, and the house sits on a bluff above the Chagrin River. The best part: it rents for overnight stays, so a night in a real Wright house is a booking away.
There’s now a second Wright design on the same property. After Wright heard I-90 might slice through the first house, he drew Penfield a replacement in 1959, one of the last designs of his life. The highway never came, and the plans sat in a drawer for 66 years until the property’s current owners finished the house, called RiverRock, in 2025.

Weltzheimer/Johnson House
About: The Weltzheimer/Johnson House in Oberlin was Ohio’s first Usonian home, completed in 1949, and it’s the rare one you can walk through with a docent explaining what you’re looking at. Brick and redwood do the heavy lifting inside, under a flat roof and deep overhangs, with clerestory windows that keep the rooms bright all day. Look up on your way in: the roof’s overhang is trimmed with hundreds of ball-shaped wood cutouts, a detail Wright used nowhere else. The house now belongs to the Allen Memorial Art Museum of Oberlin College, which runs its public open houses.
Visiting: Open house the first Sunday of the month, April through November, with docent talks on the hour from noon to 4pm. Tickets are $10, kids under 18 are free, and advance registration is required.
