The Awesome Gallery in Grove City is rolling out the welcome mat for autistic and neurodivergent adults with two new monthly events designed to foster creativity, connection, and community.
In partnership with The Awesome Company, a local screen-printing business that employs autistic adults, the gallery will host The Morning Creatives and Movie Nights starting in January and February. These events aim to provide a safe, supportive space for neurodivergent individuals to gather, express themselves, and unwind.
The Morning Creatives kicks off on Sunday, January 26, and will be held on the last Sunday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. This laid-back event is all about crafting, creating, and connecting. Free art supplies and coffee will be available, removing barriers like cost or overwhelming logistics that often prevent neurodivergent individuals from enjoying social activities.
“It’s a way to softly make friends and be around people who are alike,” said Jacquie Mahan, founder of The Awesome Company and The Awesome Gallery. “It’s a place to ‘unmask’ and create a community of understanding and fun.”
Mahan, who has worked closely with autistic adults through her screen-printing business, recognizes the unique challenges they face when it comes to socializing. From financial barriers to sensory sensitivities, many traditional social settings simply aren’t accessible or welcoming. With The Morning Creatives, she’s offering a consistent, low-pressure environment where attendees can relax and enjoy themselves.
Movie Nights are also on the horizon, with the first event scheduled for Wednesday, February 12. These gatherings will take place on the second Wednesday of each month, providing another opportunity for neurodivergent individuals to connect in a comfortable and accommodating setting.
“If we have two consistent activities every month that neurodivergent and autistic people enjoy, then we are helping bridge the space between employment and personal life,” Mahan explained.
The Awesome Gallery, located at 3400 Southwest Blvd. in Grove City, is already known for showcasing art created by autistic individuals. Now, it’s taking things a step further by creating a true community hub where neurodivergent adults can thrive.
