After more than a week of questions, grief, and unease, there has been a major development in the killing of Spencer and Monique Tepe.
Columbus police have arrested Michael David McKee, Monique Tepe’s ex-husband, in connection with the December 30 shooting deaths of the couple inside their Weinland Park home. McKee, 39, was taken into custody without incident in Rockford, Illinois, and has been charged with two counts of murder. He is currently being held in Winnebago County and is expected to appear in court.
Spencer Tepe, 37, and Monique Tepe, 39, were found dead during a welfare check after Spencer failed to show up for work. Their two young children, ages 1 and 4, were inside the home at the time and were physically unharmed. They are now in the care of family members.
The case drew intense attention in Columbus and beyond, in part because of how little information authorities were able to share as the investigation unfolded.
Police previously released surveillance footage of a person of interest near the home, but did not publicly identify a suspect until this arrest. Officials have still not disclosed a possible motive.
Friends, colleagues, and family members have described Spencer and Monique as deeply devoted parents who loved hosting gatherings and spending time with the people around them. They had celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary just weeks before their deaths.
In the days following the killings, flowers and notes piled up outside their home, a quiet memorial from neighbors and strangers alike.
As the legal process moves forward, many questions remain unanswered. For now, Columbus is left holding both relief at an arrest and the weight of an immense loss, especially for two children whose lives have been irrevocably changed.
