Summer isn’t exactly getting any cheaper, but some Ohio households can still get help keeping the lights and air conditioning on.
Ohio’s Home Energy Assistance Summer Crisis Program started back on July 1, but there’s still time to apply. The program, offered through the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and The Breathing Association, runs through Sept. 30 and can help eligible households with summer energy costs.
Depending on their situation, qualifying Ohioans may be able to get help paying their electric bill, purchasing an air conditioner or fan, or repairing a central air conditioning system.
The program is intended for low-income households, as well as households facing certain circumstances involving their electric service or health. That includes people who have received a disconnection notice, had their electricity shut off, are trying to establish new electric service, or need air conditioning for health reasons.
Households with someone age 60 or older may also qualify, as can households with a member who has a documented medical condition that makes cooling assistance necessary. Qualifying conditions can include lung disease, COPD and asthma.
For a family of four, the household’s annual gross income must be $57,750 or less to qualify. The income limits vary based on household size.
The program helped more than 55,000 Ohio households last year, providing a total of $12.4 million in assistance.
How to apply
Ohioans who want to apply need to schedule an appointment with The Breathing Association. Appointments can be made by calling 380-213-1444 or through the organization’s online scheduling system.
Applicants should bring copies of their most recent energy bills, proof of income for household members, a list of everyone in the household and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency. Additional documentation is required for applicants seeking assistance based on a disability or medical need.
People enrolled in the Percentage of Income Payment Plan Plus, or PIPP, may also qualify for Summer Crisis assistance if they meet the program requirements.
The deadline to apply is Sept. 30, 2026, so there’s still time to see whether you qualify before the summer heat really starts feeling like a personal attack.
