The Heart Of Downtown Columbus Goes Car-Free For A Day

If you’ve ever wanted to take over High Street without worrying about cars, this Sunday’s your chance. Downtown Columbus is hosting UnderCurrent: Walk, Roll, and Play, a free Open Streets 614 event where the streets are yours to stroll, scoot, skate, or wheel however you like.

From 12 to 4 p.m. on August 24, High Street (from Broad to Long) becomes a car-free playground. The highlight? The Roll Lane, a dedicated space for bikes, scooters, rollerblades, hoverboards, unicycles, and yes, even your neighbor’s hover-skate if they let you borrow it. Helmets are encouraged.

Beyond wheeled fun, there’s plenty to see and do: food trucks, pop-up workouts, live art, and activities celebrating wellness, active lifestyles, and the city’s arts and culture scene. The event is organized in partnership with Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla and Downtown Columbus, Inc., with the goal of connecting community, mobility, and fun in one afternoon.

Heads up for commuters: COTA buses on North High Street between Broad and Long will be rerouted during the event, so check COTA.com or the Transit app before you roll through.

Parking is easy with nearby garages at Columbus Commons, Ohio Statehouse, Metropolis/Leveque, and more. But if you can bike, walk, or scooter from nearby, even better—there will be plenty of bike storage on site. Dogs are welcome too, as long as they’re leashed (just keep them out of the Roll Lane).

Whether you’re cruising, skating, or just stopping by for the snacks and art, UnderCurrent: Walk, Roll, and Play promises a sunny afternoon of street-level community fun. Rain or shine, the streets are ready for you.
