The south side of Columbus is getting something it’s been missing: a brand new Metro Park.
Great Southern Metro Park opens on April 1, bringing 70 acres of green space to 125 Williams Road, right along the Scioto River. And this one isn’t just about walking trails and a nice view. There’s a little more going on here.
First, the thing everyone’s going to talk about: the obstacle course.
The park includes a 230-yard course that’s basically an open invitation to climb, balance, and see how athletic you’re actually feeling that day. You can race your friends, attempt the whole thing, or just try a couple of elements and call it a win. It’s not something you see at most Metro Parks, and it gives this spot a totally different feel.
If that’s not your thing, you’re still covered. There’s a separate fitness area nearby where you can stretch, move around, or get in a quick workout without committing to the full obstacle course experience.
Beyond that, the park settles into what you probably want from a solid Metro Park. There are paved and gravel trails for walking or running, plus a few paths where biking is allowed. Overlook areas give you views of the Scioto River, and there’s plenty of space to just hang out for a while.

There’s also a playground and picnic areas, which makes this an easy pick if you’re trying to get out of the house with kids or meet up with friends.
One of the bigger long-term perks is that this park will eventually connect to the Scioto Greenway Trail, linking it to Scioto Audubon. So down the road, this won’t just be a place you visit. It’ll be part of a much bigger route along the river.
The park has been in the works for years, with Metro Parks working alongside local partners and neighbors to shape how the space would actually be used. The end result feels practical in a good way. You can show up and figure out your day as you go, whether that means getting a workout in or just walking for a bit and heading home.
If you want to check it out right away, the grand opening is set for April 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. There will be a ribbon cutting, tram rides around the park, and drinks from G&J Pepsi. After that, Great Southern Metro Park will be open daily from 7:30 a.m. until dark.
For the south side, this is a pretty big addition. And even if it’s not your neighborhood, it’s an easy way to switch up your usual park routine this spring. For more info, head over to metroparks.net.
