Crumbl has closed its Easton cookie shop, and a restaurant equipment auction is forthcoming.
The store at 4034 Morse Crossing in Columbus opened in January 2022, when Easton announced its arrival by calling Crumbl the fastest-growing cookie company in the country. The auction listing for its equipment, posted by Columbus auctioneer Paul Delphia, says the shop is “closed for business” and its lease is ending.
The equipment auction runs through October 15th
The online auction opened October 1st and closes October 15th at about 4 p.m. The auctioneer’s bidding catalog puts an open house at the shop on Sunday, October 11th from 1 to 4 p.m., and notes that the Crumbl sign is already down. Showings by appointment are available at other times. The listing says the equipment was bought new and is still in very good condition. Up for bid are two Hobart dough mixers, two Blodgett mini rotary ovens, eight two-door reach-in refrigerators, a glass-door freezer, a three-compartment sink and the dry goods left on the shelves.
Crumbl’s own website has already dropped Easton from its store locator, and the shop’s old page now returns an error.
Crumbl has closed at least 57 stores this year
Entrepreneur reported on October 5th that at least 57 Crumbl stores have closed this year and that the company recently laid off much of its franchise support staff. An internal document obtained by Restaurant Business showed August sales were 70 percent lower than two years earlier, and Placer.ai foot-traffic data had visits to Crumbl’s more than 1,000 locations down 32 percent year over year.
CEO Jason McGowan told franchisees “It’s my fault where we are today,” Entrepreneur reported, citing Restaurant Business. McGowan and co-founder Sawyer Hemsley said in May that they’d step down from day-to-day roles, and McGowan says a new CEO is coming soon.
