Arthur Treacher’s, the iconic Ohio-based fish and chips chain, is making a comeback! Once a popular fast-food spot with more than 800 locations, the chain had dwindled down to just two restaurants in recent years. Now, the beloved brand is opening a third location in Cleveland Heights, bringing a wave of nostalgia for its famous fried fish and hush puppies.
The new spot will be located at 13216 Cedar Road, Cleveland Heights, OH.
That location might sound familiar to northern transplants to Columbus—it’s the same spot that once housed an Arthur Treacher’s from the 1970s to the 1990s.
This relaunch is a homecoming of sorts, as Cleveland Heights residents will soon be able to enjoy their favorite fish and chips at a location they may have fond memories of. The brand’s other two eateries are also located in Northeast Ohio, in Garfield Heights and Cuyahoga Falls.
Founded in 1969 in Columbus, Arthur Treacher’s quickly gained fame for its British-style fish and chips, hush puppies, clam chowder, and even fried chicken. The chain was named after Arthur Treacher, a British actor known for his roles in 1930s films and for playing a butler in the classic Disney film “Mary Poppins.”
During its peak in the 1970s, Arthur Treacher’s had over 820 locations nationwide.
However, after bouncing between different owners and facing financial struggles—including a brief stint under Lumara Foods in 1982 that led to bankruptcy—the chain saw its presence shrink dramatically.
Despite these challenges, the brand has held on to its loyal fan base, especially in Ohio. The new Cleveland Heights location is expected to open its doors by the end of the year, offering a fresh opportunity for both long-time fans and newcomers to experience a taste of history.
