Columbus Symphony sponsored 💸 this post. But rest assured, all thoughts and opinions contained within are genuine and our own. 👍🏼
Summer is in full swing here in Columbus.
And with summer comes one of the most iconic celebrations in the city, Picnic with the Pops. Presented by Nationwide, the Columbus Symphony puts on one heck of a show at the Columbus Commons on the weekends.
It’s become quite the go-to destination for families, couples, and basically everyone and that’s because it’s a good freaking time! The concerts have different themes, featuring a variety of artists and styles of music.
If you still need a little convincing, let me explain to you why Picnic with the Pops has become a summer institution in this city!
1. You get to use your picnic basket.
We got a picnic basket as a wedding present and at first, I was like, we’ll never use this. But boy was I wrong. I love any excuse to bust that thing out, and I’m not the only one. Packing your own picnic foods and beverages is a huge selling point when it comes to going to a concert. So save the $30 you would have spent on buying food at the event and buy an extra ticket to the show for a friend!
2. It’s a great way to celebrate 4th of July.
Everything, and I do mean everything, is better with a little live music. That’s certainly true about the 4th of July. Patriotic Pops is probably one of the things I look forward to most all year long. There’s just nothing quite like hearing the orchestra playing America’s greatest hits. Plus, there are fireworks. What’s not to love?
3. It’s family friendly.
This may not be a concern for everyone, but I come from a big family and we’re always looking for things that will entertain ages ranging from 9-60+. Taking a blanket or chairs, snacks, and getting kids in for $10 are all pluses when it comes to our family, and we’re not the only ones. It’s also a great way to inspire a love of music in the kiddos that they’ll take with them their entire lives!
4. It brings people together in the heart of Downtown Columbus.
Picnic with the Pops moved to the Columbus Commons in 2012, and ever since, it’s been pulling in an incredible audience. The venue is intimate and fun and offers people the chance to have an incredible night under the stars in the heart of downtown! Parking is easy at the garage nearby, which means you get to ignore the stress of looking for a place to ditch the car.
5. You don’t actually have to picnic if you don’ want to.
You may not realize this, but going to Picnic at the Pops doesn’t actually require you to pack a picnic. If you want, you and your fam can book a table at the event, which allows you to purchase a catered meal for the evening! The food options typically correspond wonderfully with the concert’s theme, and all you have to do is sit down and enjoy it!
6. It’s a celebration of everything that makes our city so wonderful.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: organizations like the Columbus Symphony make our city a more vibrant place to live. I know it’s no secret that I was (and still am) a band geek, but you don’t have to be to appreciate how a vibrant arts community helps elevate our entire city.
