Whether you are participating in Lent or not, there’s one thing we can all agree on; Fish Fry season is the bomb. Luckily for us, Columbus and the surrounding area has some amazing options to choose from when it comes to flaky and fried deliciousness. With the exception of a few of these locations, you can hit up all of these fish fries every Friday from March 3rd through April 7th.
Catholic fish fries have a long history. The tradition of abstaining from eating meat comes as a recognition of the death of Jesus on Good Friday and was first associated with Lent in the 3rd and 4th centuries and was later legitimized into canon law. In modern society, churches use fish fries as a way to build their ties to their community and to enjoy fellowship with their parishioners.
“The Lenten fish fry gives Catholics an opportunity to observe their meatless Friday while bolstering their sense of community,” said Karen Cook, Director of Evangelization and Pastoral Ministries at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Grove City. “Profits from the Fish Fry at Our Lady of Perpetual Help of Grove City, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 4603, support the work of the Church. In addition to Fish Fry Fridays, Catholic parishes also pray the Stations of the Cross, which dates back to the 4th century, on Fridays during Lent.”
