There’s something magical about spotting a bald eagle in the wild, but spotting a baby bald eagle? That’s the kind of springtime serotonin we all need.
Over at the 100 Acre Wood near Blendon Woods Metro Park, a pair of bald eagles has been nesting, and they’ve welcomed at least two eaglets into the world this season. According to park naturalists, the chicks have finally reached that “peek over the edge of the nest” phase, which means now’s your chance to see them in action.
The best part? You don’t have to be a wilderness expert to join in.
Every Sunday through the first weekend of May, Blendon Woods is hosting a naturalist-led hike out to the nesting site. The hike kicks off at 2 p.m. at 5220 Cambria Way in Westerville, and it’s a pretty chill, rustic half-mile walk—perfect for families or anyone who wants to add a little wildlife watching to their weekend.
If a guided hike isn’t your thing, you can also visit anytime on your own.
Just know that the area is more “choose your own adventure” than your typical Metro Park stroll. There are no official trails, no bathrooms, no paved walkways—just 150+ acres of untouched old-growth forest with dramatic ravines, towering bluffs (some over 100 feet!), and plenty of natural beauty to soak up.
The 100 Acre Wood isn’t officially a Metro Park, but it’s managed by Blendon Woods staff.
It definitely feels like one of the most scenic hidden gems in the system. Some of the trees in the forest are centuries old and it’s generally just a magical place to spend an afternoon.
Parking is street-only near 5280 Cambria Way, so be prepared to do a little navigating. And as always, keep a respectful distance from the nest—binoculars are your best friend here.
So whether you’re a seasoned birder or just looking for a cute new spring tradition, this is your sign to go see the eaglets while they’re still fluffy.
