Road trip people, this one’s for you.
A brand new way to explore the Buckeye State is rolling out just in time for America’s 250th birthday, and it’s basically a greatest hits tour of how Ohio helped keep the country moving.
The America 250-Ohio commission just announced the Ohio Transportation Trail, a statewide driving route that connects more than 80 sites tied to travel, innovation, and the ways people and ideas have moved through Ohio over the years.
It’s part of the larger Trails & Tales program, which is building out a series of themed trails across the state ahead of the 2026 semiquincentennial celebration. Yes, that’s the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and yes, it’s kind of a mouthful.
So what’s actually on the trail? A lot, actually.
The Ohio Transportation Trail pulls together stops that highlight everything from aviation to railroads to good old-fashioned road trips. Some of the standout spots include the National Aviation Hall of Fame, the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, and the Ohio Railway Museum.
You’ll also find places like the Soap Box Derby Museum, which feels like pure childhood nostalgia, and the Providence Metropark, where you can get a feel for Ohio’s canal-era history.
The trail will debut during the Transportation Celebration at the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum on April 25 and 26.
If you’ve never been, the depot is one of those places that already feels like stepping into another era, so it’s a pretty fitting spot to kick things off.
The Transportation Trail is the fifth addition to the Trails & Tales lineup.
Other trails already out there include the Ohio Air & Space Trail, the Ohio Creativity Trail, the Lake Erie to Ohio River Trail, and the Ohio Innovation Trail. One more is still on the way later this year.
The goal is to give people a bunch of different ways to explore Ohio, whether you’re into art, science, history, or just looking for an excuse to get out of town for the day.
There’s no single “right” way to do this trail, which is kind of the fun of it. You can build a full road trip around it or just pick a few stops for a weekend adventure.
Either way, it’s a reminder that some of the most interesting stories in Ohio are the ones you can actually go see for yourself. And sometimes, the best part is just getting there! To learn more about America 250’s Ohio celebrations, head over to america250-ohio.org.
