A day at the waterpark is always fun, but on Thursday morning, Zoombezi Bay is focusing on something even more important than the slides.
The Powell waterpark is once again hosting the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, joining hundreds of aquatic facilities around the globe to teach children essential water safety skills while attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest simultaneous swimming lesson.
The event takes place Thursday, June 25, from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Wild Tides Wave Pool and is open to children ages 2 and older.
Now in its 17th year at Zoombezi Bay, the event is designed to help families build confidence in the water while reinforcing life-saving swimming skills. The lesson will be led by the park’s certified lifeguards and follows American Red Cross safety guidelines. Parents are welcome to join their children in the pool, and the lesson will be divided into shorter, age-appropriate sessions.
One of the biggest perks? Participants can enjoy the park after the lesson wraps up.
Admission is just $18 per participant, which includes the swim lesson plus admission to both Zoombezi Bay and the Columbus Zoo for the rest of the day. The lesson is free for Zoombezi Bay Season Pass holders, while accompanying guests pay regular admission.
The event also shines a spotlight on an important issue. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4, and formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by as much as 88% for young children.
Check-in begins at 9:15 a.m. at the Season Pass entrance, and while pre-registration is encouraged, guests can also register and purchase tickets on the day of the event.
Families can also enjoy meet-and-greets with Zoombezi Bay’s character ambassadors before and after the lesson, along with special animal ambassador appearances from the Columbus Zoo following the event, weather permitting.
