Nearly Century-Old Columbus Greenhouse DeMonye’s Will Close This Summer

After nearly 100 years in business, one of Columbus’s longest-running local greenhouses is preparing to close its doors for good.

DeMonye’s Greenhouse is slated to close at the end of the summer as the property is redeveloped into a new apartment community near John Glenn Columbus International Airport.

The family-owned greenhouse has been part of the Columbus community since 1929, becoming a longtime destination for generations of local gardeners, plant lovers, and families. Brian Killilea, whose family has operated DeMonye’s since 1965, told 10TV the decision to close was made by the family after decades in business.

“I’ve been doing this for 40 years,” Killilea siad, calling his time running the greenhouse “a good run.”

The greenhouse will remain open through August, with a final liquidation sale planned before the business officially closes. Killilea also said he’s currently working to help employees find positions at other local greenhouses.

The roughly 5.7-acre property at 2500 Airport Dr. was purchased by Columbus-based developer Rocky Point Partners, which plans to build a 130-unit apartment community called “The Hanger.” According to the developer, the name is a reference to the site’s proximity to the airport.

The project is expected to cost approximately $31 million, with groundbreaking tentatively planned for later this year and residents potentially moving in by early 2028.

Developers said they hope to honor DeMonye’s long history by incorporating flower gardens and Christmas trees into the future apartment community, though for many Columbus residents, replacing a nearly century-old greenhouse with new development reflects the broader changes happening across the city.

Until August, though, it’s still business as usual at DeMonye’s, giving longtime customers one final season to wander the greenhouses that have been part of Columbus for generations. DeMoyne’s is located at 2500 Airport Dr, Columbus, OH 43219. For more info, head over to demonyes.net.
