Travelers flying out of CMH can check estimated TSA security wait times directly on the airport’s website before leaving home.
The airport’s security page shows hour-by-hour wait time estimates for the entire day, giving passengers a quick look at how busy checkpoints are expected to be.
As of this update, the airport pegs the average security wait at about 12 and a half minutes, though that number moves around depending on the day and time. The tool breaks down estimates by hour so travelers can see when lines may be longer or shorter.
For example, estimates before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m. often sit in the single digits, while the mid-morning rush between 7 and 11 a.m. can push past 30 minutes.
Of course, the estimates aren’t a guarantee.
The airport notes that wait times are subject to change and may not reflect the exact experience travelers will have when they arrive.
How early should you get to CMH?
Even with the tool available, airport officials still recommend arriving at least 90 minutes before domestic flights and two hours before international departures to allow enough time for parking, check-in, and security.

When are CMH security lines shortest?
Based on the airport’s own hour-by-hour estimates, the quiet windows are before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m., when waits often run just a few minutes. The checkpoint backs up hardest during the mid-morning departure bank, roughly 7 to 11 a.m., when estimates can top 30 minutes. All three checkpoints run 4 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. If your flight leaves during a busy stretch, treat the airport’s 90-minute recommendation as a floor rather than an abundance of caution.
TSA PreCheck and CLEAR both work at CMH
If the standard line estimate looks rough, CMH supports both major expedited screening programs. TSA PreCheck travelers get a dedicated lane that typically moves in about half the time of the standard line. CLEAR runs at Checkpoint B in the center of the terminal, where members verify identity at a kiosk and skip the ID check entirely. That’s also where the walk-up enrollment desk for both programs sits, open daily from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., no appointment needed.
Do you need a REAL ID to fly out of CMH?
Yes. TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted form of ID, like a passport, for all domestic flights. Look for the star in the top corner of your license.
