Downtown Columbus is gaining some exciting new neighbors this fall with the arrival of Toro Meat Market, a family-owned Hispanic grocery store, and Dos Hermanos, a popular local Mexican restaurant.
Toro Meat Market will open its fifth location inside the newly converted residential building at 150 E. Gay Street. The market will offer fresh produce, a butcher counter, prepared foods, and a selection of Mexican and Central American favorites. It’s designed to serve the daily needs of downtown residents who have been craving more grocery options close to home.
Just a few blocks away at 16 N. High Street, Dos Hermanos will open its sixth brick-and-mortar spot. Known for its tamales and authentic Oaxacan dishes, the new restaurant will offer sit-down dining, takeout, and late-night delivery with a full bar serving margaritas. This new location aims to create a welcoming gathering place for downtown residents, workers, and festival-goers alike.
Both businesses are part of the city’s Ground Floor Growth program.
The program helps minority and women-owned small businesses secure affordable retail space downtown. This effort is part of a larger push to transform the neighborhood into a vibrant, walkable community where people can live, shop, and eat without needing to leave the area.
Councilmember Nick Bankston says the initiative reflects a commitment to building a downtown that feels like home for a growing number of residents. With thousands moving into the area, local groceries and restaurants are essential for making downtown a true neighborhood—not just a business district.
As Columbus plans for growth, adding amenities like Toro Meat Market and Dos Hermanos helps lay the foundation for a lively, connected urban core that supports both daily life and new development.
