Columbus Is Getting A Brand New, State-Of-The-Art Ice Hockey School

Columbus will soon be home to a brand new, state-of-the-art ice hockey facility, that will also be an academic institution.

Viking Hockey Academy is the brainchild of Dr. Morten Haugland, CEO and Founder of Haugland Learning Center.

The idea sprang up came to them not as academics, but as parents of three children who play hockey. “My wife and I were driving from the school all over town for hockey, and we joked, maybe we should just build a rink,” Haugland told 1st Ohio Battery.

The facility will be 85,000 square feet and will include two-regulation size ice rinks, a ‘studio size’ rink, a training center, and weight room. What makes it different from other pre-existing facilities is it’s inclusion of a daycare program and educational classrooms.

The $12 million dollar project will be built just off Sawmill road at I-270.

“I believe this location is ideal. It’s situated just off (interstate) 270, and you can see it from the highway,” said Haugland. “Everyone that has an interest in kids playing hockey knows that we need more ice.”

The Hauglands expect to break ground on the Viking Hockey Academy in summer or early fall 2018 and hope to be open by September 2019.
