Skip The Dishes And Go To Valter’s At The Maennerchor For Your Next Meal

When I was a kid, I got it into my head that I didn’t like German food.

Honestly, I think my knowledge was fairly limited to sauerkraut, which to be fair, I still don’t enjoy. But once I had the opportunity to sample the local cuisine while spending time in Germany, all that dislike I had went right out the window.

Luckily, for me and my taste buds, I happen to live in an area that has some amazing German restaurants. Which brings me to the point. If you’re looking for your new favorite Deutschland eatery, look no further.

Located at 976 S High St., Valter’s at the Maennerchor is a great place to grab a meal with friends or family. The Maennerchor was founded over 150 years ago by 12 young, newly American men. Since then, the Columbus Maennerchor has served as the nation’s largest and longest continually active German singing society and social club.

Adding a restaurant into the mix is a natural fit, giving both members of the Maennerchor and customers a place to gather, eat, drink, and have a good time. Valter’s has been open for a couple of years now, but for some inexplicable reason, I had never thought to step in the door. (I’m ashamed too, don’t worry.)

The menu is phenomenal. I’m a sucker for breakfast food, which is why I couldn’t resist ordering “The Breakfast Hangover”. Technically, this is typically found on the Brunch menu, which is only offered on the weekends. But it was included in the lunch specials, and I just can’t walk away from a skillet meal.

What I didn’t realize is that this could have easily fed two people. The Breakfast Hangover is a homemade breakfast bowl served with home fries. It comes topped with bacon, bratwurst, egg, onion, peppers, tomato and cheddar cheese and served with a warm baguette. When they say it comes in a skillet, believe them. We’re talking a huge cast iron skillet. I had to tap out early, but my husband certainly appreciated the leftovers.

The decor and design at Valter’s are authentically German. I felt transported back to the homey pubs my sister and I ate at every night while traveling through Europe. The restaurant had a lovely patio area, but you know Ohio weather.

Valter’s at the Maennerchor is open Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. In addition to brunch on Saturday and Sunday, the restaurant also offers an awesome Happy Hour, Monday-Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
